ZA0301 hydraulic steering system kit

This is a wonderfully made steering system to replace the usual mechanical steering system on outboard motor boats. The fittings are all corrosion proof and the system is sealed against saltwater intrusion. The hoses can be easily routed since they don't move with the steering, they only move slightly with the tilting of the motor.

There is a serious problem with the kit, however. The installation instructions that are furnished are for another kit, in which the cylinder moves with the steering, and which uses different compression fittings. If the instructions are followed, the steering will be backwards. So install the kit as follows: Hook up the hoses to the helm pump first and pass the hoses through the hole in the console, then through the backing ring, and then to the engine location. The hose connected to the port side of the helm pump should go to the tee fitting on the port side of the cylinder. The hoses will usually be too long, and can easily be shortened by cutting with a utility knife -- bend the tube back and cut the tube where it's under the greatest tension, and the hose will snap off cleanly. Remove the compression fitting from the cut off part of the hose and assemble it onto the usable part using a new hose ferrule (short ferrule, only one end tapered vs two ends tapered for the tube ferrules).
